Happy Tuesday, friends!
We finally got rid of the mounds of snow from Kansas City's Insane Winter of 2019 but we've traded them for a rainy couple of days this week. The weather and its impact on mood has been a hot topic in the therapy room the last couple of months and I think we are ALL ready for some sun here in the 816. Warmer weather brings a host of things: better mood, more energy, motivation, etc.
Sounds like the perfect ingredients for engaging in some self-care to me.
What is self-care?
In case you haven’t heard, “self-care” is one of the biggest freakin’ buzzwords happening in the wellness community for the past couple of years. It’s not always about eating the donut or taking the bubble bath. It’s also about being aware of what you need mentally, emotionally, physically, etc – at any given moment. It’s recognizing when you’re run down and finding what will help heighten your spirit.
Sometimes that is chocolate cake, sometimes it’s spending time alone doing something new, and sometimes it’s re-connecting with that old friend you haven’t talked to in a while. There are basically endless options to invest in yourself.
I've been doing some thinking lately. In an effort to serve my community outside of the therapy room, I’m diving into exploring our trendy city and finding some of the best and unique ways to engage in self-care.
So, I’m takin’ self-care to the streets.
From KC to Lee’s Summit to Overland Park to Liberty and everywhere in between, I’m finding you the greatest places to go and the most fun things to do to help give YOU some ideas for when you need to show yourself some love.
In an effort to keep things organized (Hi, my name is Greta, and I’m Type A), I’ll be grouping the self-care ideas into various areas that need “watering” in our lives every now and then. Here’s where we’ll start:
CHILL – Get zen af. These are going to be the quiet places and relaxing things to do when you need to slow down, relax, and maybe journal a little.
CONNECT – Staying in touch with family can be hard because we all get into the groove of our own lives. Whether you have family close by or relatives that visit every now and then, I’ll share some good activities that help you re-connect with those you love most.
GIVE – Want that helper’s high? These are going to include volunteering opportunities, charity gatherings, and feel-good organizations I find around the city. Pretend to be shocked when some of it is dog-related.
HUSTLE – Feeling like you want to boost your productivity or make some connections? These ideas will inspire you to focus on your goals, direct you to cool places to have meetings with your mentor, or inform you of professional development workshops or opportunities!
LOVE – Love is in the air. It can be easy for us to fall into a monotonous routine in our romantic relationships, so I’ll share some unique date ideas or ways to bond with your significant other.
NOURISH – Good for the mind, body, and soul. These self-care acts will be nutritious eats around the city, fun ways to move your body, and other ideas to cultivate that full spirit of yours.
SOCIALIZE – Sometimes we need to get out of the house and enjoy our friends. It’s what they’re there for! These are going to be the best ideas for fun things to do or engaging activities to just enjoy your friends. Girls nights are going to be in full-swing.
TREAT – For the times you want to indulge and treat yo’self. It’ll include cutest places to shop for yourself, relaxing places to get that spa day you’ve been wanting, and hidden gems for those times when you’re just craving the best dessert around.
So there it is, folks. This is going to be so fun! Make sure you follow me on Instagram @stateofmindkc to stay updated on all the ideas coming your way. They’ll be spread out over time so none of us get overwhelmed and time-crunched with all the amazing things we can do in this beautiful city of ours.
